There are a lot of options out there right now, but how do you separate the wheat from the chaff and save yourself money, time and stress?
Here is a simple guide to help you find the right fit for your next creative project.
Should you work with a full-production agency, boutique creative studio or freelancer?
Ad Agencies
These are useful if you have a higher than average budget and require a full production service - like concept development, wed-design, SEO, branding, art direction, photography, video etc. etc.
They often have their own production studios and a large in-house teams and can turn projects around quickly and efficiently using tested, successful and repeatable methods and processes. They are more impersonal and due to the larger overheads not cost effective for small to medium projects. This solution works best for large brands who want to consolidate their creative production to a single agency rather than have the hassle or costs associated with multiple creative companies.
Freelancers
Freelancers are the most cost-effective alternative and many are extremely talented. They often work with agencies for short term projects and usually market themselves under their own names. The best freelancers work within a niche like automotive retouching, motion design, product visualisations, VFX etc and stick within their own specialisms. Freelancers are a good choice for businesses with lower budgets who know exactly what they want and can direct the artist. Though be aware that freelancers vary in skills and experience and the portfolio alone may not be a good indicator of ability. When viewing a portfolio, its important to find out what clients the freelancer has worked with and how much did they contribute to the work. Also the turnaround time and responsiveness can vary depending on the freelancers other commitments as they can only service one client at a time.
Small Boutique Studios
Small boutique studios, like us ;), fill in the gap between the freelancer and ad agency. They usually work within a niche though not as broad as an Ad agency or as limited as the freelancer. Small studios still work with agencies, but generally take on larger projects. Small studios can offer a bespoke, personalised service and can take on more varied, complex projects as they operate as a small team of creatives. These studios work with all sizes of businesses from start-ups to large companies. They won’t necessarily be the cheapest option but will have the most flexibility to work to individual budgets and can turn around projects fairly quickly. They can also offer advice, concept development and project management.
