Is AI really a communist?
I find it deeply ironic seeing the big-tech companies and the proponents of 'neo-liberal capitalism', the ‘pull yourself by the bootstraps’ and the ‘taxing wealth kills innovation’ brigade, pontificating over the virtues of ‘democratizing creativity’ with AI - and how this will allow anyone with the money for a subscription, fingers and an at least partially functioning frontal cortex the ability to generate the kind of results that used to take time, talent, skill and dedication to achieve. Yipee - now we can degrade and devalue every creative industry from music to writing to visual arts etc etc. Funny how comfortable these staunch ‘capitalists’ are with ‘socialist’ ideologies when its other peoples ‘stuff’?
As a creative, I look at all this through the lens of an artist, but this is relevant to anybody who holds data digitally. For creatives ‘we’ are the ‘capital’ our ‘asset’ is our skills and talents. We spend years developing this ‘asset’ and usually at much financial and time ‘cost’ - Creative talent and hard work used, to be a way that ordinary people could achieve great things, without the advantages of being born into wealth. How many stories do we hear of people originating from humble backgrounds, managing to become hugely successful through talent and hard work. How many young peoples dreams and opportunities are we crushing with the endless march towards ‘democratising’ art. In other words big tech companies feel entitled to steal, sorry I mean ‘use for training AI models’ the hard work of millions of artists for their own profits.
If you truly believe in the capitalist model, then surely you also believe that the ‘product’ of our own hard work and financial investment, belongs to us and should be financially rewarded right? right?
